I think one of the greatest things about being a school bus driver is working alongside with schools. That means being on their schedule. This includes you not having to work weekends, and even better, holidays.
Ah, yes. The schedule of a school bus driver, the split shift. To me, it’s a love/hate kind of thing.
Us school bus drivers work around the times children go to school and when school ends for the day, cuz you know, we bring them to and from school. This means we typically don’t work during the midday.
Lately, I’ve been picking up an extra route to increase my savings. I have been doing this one route that is only out of one school. It has 9 students, 8 stops. At first, I was a bit worried being put on a route with that many stops and not know where I am going. Luckily, I found out it was much easier that I thought.
I get to the school and await my passengers. Oh, by the way, this route has one of our brand new buses assigned to it. First time driving one of them, and it was amazing.
I was covering a shift in the afternoon one day. I had my two back seat drivers with me and we were on our way to drop our last student off at their stop.
5 minutes before I get there I hear dispatch chirp over the radio that they needed someone to cover a charter immediately. After a few minutes of silence they chirped again, repeating the message. Since I was going to be done soon, I figured since nobody was taking it, I’ll do it.
Everyone knows how expensive Daycare can be. To be honest, if I brought my two boys to Daycare, I would basically be going to work just to pay for Daycare. That doesn’t make any sense.
I am lucky enough to have a job that I can bring my kids with me to work. Yes! I don’t have to pay for Daycare! This takes away a huge burden on our budget. I also don’t have to worry about strangers watching my kids, or drive time to daycare that takes time out of my day.
Hey! You stuck around to read another one of my posts, and I thank you for that!
Here is Part 2 of You Could Be A School Bus Driver.
This being the first post of Confessions of a School Bus Driver, I feel it only necessary to tell you that it is really easy to be a school bus driver.
I am not trying to take away the fact that my job can be very trying at times, and I appreciate when someone says to me they appreciate me being a bus driver, and that they could never be one.
